Take Hedgehogge Lard: A look at the ways that families looked after their health in the time of the Tudors and Stuarts.

If you have ever had a tooth-ache, or a headache that simply won’t ease up you were probably extremely grateful for the NHS and professional medical and surgical help. In the period we shall consider, though, you couldn’t simply drop in at the local doctor’s surgery, or call in at the local pharmacist’s or supermarket for an off-the-shelf remedy. The women of a household needed to know how to manage and treat as many different health problems as possible, and use their skills and knowledge to provide help to their families and friends.

I consider some of the strange remedies and treatments, and the reasons why the cost of paying for medical care meant that most people had to be self-sufficient in health care.
