Casting Stones cover

The 16th and 17th centuries saw the beginning of the end for the ancient numerical system based on letters and used since Roman times. The ways in which people undertook mathematical calculations changed and the foundations were laid which would ultimately give us computers. This booklet considers some of this story, with descriptions of the different methods used, including the first commercial mechanical calculator, the Pascaline.
